Alsip, IL Firefighters Respond to Hazmat Incident

Story by MARK GLOWCZYNSKI Photos by KEVIN STANFORD

At approx. 0900 hrs on Friday Aug 16, the Alsip Il Fire Dept responded to a unknown type leak at a local shipping logistics warehouse in a mainly industrial area of town.

Upon arrival crews quickly determined that there was a combined total of 3-4 liters of Hydrochloric, Sulfuric, and Nitric acids spilled in a van. The Southwest HazMat Response team was called along with a 2-11 HazMat box. This brought in towns as far as Frankfort and Peotone.

As a result of extensive training and great teamwork by all depts, the spill was mitigated and cleaned up within 4 hrs, and there were no injuries.
