Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania Firefighters Battle Flaming Barns

Story/Photos by LARRY NEFF

Four structures were destroyed by fire on the farm of Carl Heisler along Catawissa Road in Walker Township, Schuylkill County, Tuesday, August 20, 2002. The fire was electrical in nature.

Although many heads of cattle were saved, at lease ten heffers were lost as well as two farm tractors and a pickup truck.

Firefighters managed to save a large barn adjacent to the burning structures.

At times the roof of the barn and the hay inside started to smoke but firemen kept lines on the structure to keep it cool.

At least ten fire companies from throughout eastern Schuylkill county battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control.

Due to the remote location of the site water had to tanked into the scene.

Pumpers were able to draft from a pond about fifteen hundred feet away, using five inch line to deliver the water.

Two family members were slightly burned in making an effort to stop the fire.
