Virginia Beach Firefighters Extricate Man from Overturned Vehicle

Story & Photos by MARTIN GRUBE

Virginia Beach firefighters worked diligently Monday September 2, 2002 when a T-bone collision put a Toyota SUV on its side.

The accident occurred on Princess Anne Road just 300 yards from Engine 5’s firehouse.

Engine 5 arrived on scene first and as one firefighter manned a hose line, another took C Spine control on the patient.

The VBFD Technical Rescue Team responded with Squad 10 and Ladder 9 arrived shortly after.

Firefighters tied off the door, used battery operated saws and “O” Cutters to open up the roof and windshield to allow for proper back boarding and packing of the patient.

Incident Command Battalion Chief Skip Brehm directed the operation.

The victim was not seriously injured but was unable to get out of the vehicle.

EMS 5, Squad 14 and Rescue 5 were also on scene.
