Alabama Firefighters Battle Historic Prattvile Mill Fire

Story & Photos by NEAL MIXON

A three alarm fire ripped through a vacated building in the late hours of September 10.

At approximately 11 p.m. September 10, 2001, Prattville firefighters were dispatched to the 3 story structure and arrived to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the 143 year-old Gurney building.A third alarm was struck by the first arriving units.

It took 75 firefighters from several neighboring departments to bring the fire under control. The building was built in 1859 by the founder of the City of Prattville and used as a cotton gin and had a storied history that included making uniforms for the Confederate army during the civil war.

The building had been vacant since 1997.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
