Southern Louisiana Firefighters Battle Tanker Truck Explosion

Story & Photos by LENNY CUNNINGHAM

Firefighters from several South Louisiana fire departments responded to a motor vehicle crash September 20th in Broussard, Louisiana.

An SUV pulled into the path of a tanker truck carrying a natural gas condensate.

The tanker rolled into its side near a gas station, rupturing the tank and causing an immediate fire.

The driver was trapped inside and died as a result of the fire.

Firefighters were challenged with not only the tanker fire, but the product leaked into a ditch, traveled through a culvert and ignited in a ditch under a bridge.

The initial responding fire companies were from the Broussard Fire Department, and they were assisted by companies from Youngsville, Milton, Cade, St. Martinville and Lafayette, as well as Haz Mat units from Lafayette, Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
