Fire Risk Triggers Mower Recall

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Kansas company is recalling about 1,500 riding lawn mowers because the fuel line can droop and get cut, posing a fire hazard and possibly burns to users.

Excel Industries Inc., of Hesston, has received two reports of gasoline leaks, but no injuries or property damage, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

The recall involves Hustler ``FasTrak'' riding mowers with 44-inch and 52-inch decks, and are yellow and black with the ``FasTrak'' logo printed on both sides.

The mowers were sold by authorized dealers nationwide from November 2001 through May 2002 for between $4,700 and $5,500.

CPSC said consumers should stop using the mowers and contact their local Hustler dealer, where the problem can be fixed or the fuel line replaced, by calling 1-800-395-4757 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday.

Separately, an Ohio company is recalling about 5,000 grass bags for its lawn mowers because they do not seal properly, potentially causing injury from grass and other debris thrown from the bag.

MTD Products Inc., of Cleveland, has not received any reports of injuries, according to the CPSC.

The grass bags are attachments for the company's 19-inch electric walk-behind lawn mowers with model numbers 18A-407-000, with a red body, and 18A-407-062, which has a green body.

The mowers were sold at home improvement stores and mass retailers nationwide from January 2002 through July 2002 for under $200.

Consumers should contact MTD for a free replacement bag by calling 1-888-848-6038 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday.
