Fire Chief

DUTIES: This is a highly important administrative position involving responsibility for planning and directing all firefighting and fire prevention activities. The position entails responsibility of the highest order for the protection of lives and property. The instruction and training of recruits, as well as the maintenance of high standards of performance throughout the force, are the final responsibilities of the chief. Administrative direction is received from the Board of Fire  Commissioners.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before January 26, 2013: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND: EITHER: A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree and ten (10) years of full-time paid work experience in any position or combination of positions in the rank of Fire Captain or higher;  OR: B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree and fifteen (15) years of volunteer experience* as a Firefighter, eight (8) of which must have been served as a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Chief or any combination thereof. *Applicants must submit a letter from a Fire Department or Fire District providing credit for current service or active volunteer experience.


NOTE: Full time paid work experience as a Deputy Fire Chief or Fire Chief may be substituted for the educational requirement as described in (A) above on a year for year basis.


NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, part-time experience will be pro-rated towards meeting the full-time experience requirements.
