The City of North Platte is currently seeking candidates for the position of Fire Chief. The vacancy has occurred due to the announced retirement of our current Chief after 40 years of service. North Platte is a Nebraska community of approximately 25,000 and is the county seat of Lincoln County, Nebraska. This vibrant area is blessed with many recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, water sports and historical sites that will make it an ideal place to call “home”.
The Fire Chief has management oversight of annual budget of $4,500,000. The hiring salary range will be $65,000.00 to $92,500.00 based on qualifications and experience. The North Platte Fire Department is a combination department with 42 career line staff, 36 volunteers, two office support staff and one building maintenance man.
The Fire Chief plans, directs, supervises and reviews activities of career and volunteer fire personnel performing fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, fire inspection, fire prevention, fire safety and code enforcement. He also directs matters pertaining to personnel, apparatus and equipment, develops ordinances, laws and regulations, training programs and drills.
Prepares fire department budgets, submits monthly and annual reports, and maintains fire, EMS and hazardous material records, including losses to buildings and contents. Meets with the Mayor, City Administrator, Civil Service Commission, other city department directors and citizen groups, to coordinate Fire Department activities and responds to emergencies after hours.
Job requirements are any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school, plus completion of courses in basic and advanced firefighting, certification as an emergency medical technician and fire department administration; must have nine years of experience in a career fire department, including five years of service at a command level (Chief Officer or one rank below Chief); an AA Degree in Fire Science or business related. A Bachelor’s degree and/or EFO Graduate is desirable. Possession of a valid Nebraska driver’s license.
