A City of Iowa City Firefighter online application must be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014. A resume or general City of Iowa City employment application will not substitute for the online Firefighter application. 

The Iowa City Fire Department’s jurisdiction encompasses approximately 26 square miles which includes 67,900 residents, the University of Iowa campus, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Twenty-four hour coverage at the four fire stations provides emergency response to more than 5,100 medical, fire, technical rescue, and hazardous materials incidents per year. The department is an accredited agency with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

Iowa City has 65 fire department employees who serve in a semi-military style with a rank structure of Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and Fire Chief. Fire Department employees currently work a 56-hour week consisting of 24-hour continuous shifts beginning at 7:00 a.m.

All new employees undergo a probationary period of one year during which the employee will receive intensive training and their work performance will be carefully evaluated. The Iowa City Fire Department provides emergency medical response at the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic level. EMT-B and Firefighter I training are provided by the Fire Department with certification for both required prior to the end of the probationary period.

Starting annual salary is $47,961 (effective January 5, 2014)
