The Town of Castle Rock has an outstanding opportunity for a Fire and Life Safety Educator/Inspector. Under general direction of the Fire Marshal (FM) this position will perform Life Safety inspections and manage the fire and life safety education programs, establish, maintain and present comprehensive community education programs and coordinate efforts within the Fire Department and associated public safety agencies in the community. This position is also responsible for providing technical information in the prevention of fires through fire inspections, public education and emergency preparedness of the business community. This position is expected to perform duties in a manner consistent with the mission, vision and values of the Town and Department.
Responsibilities include conducting fire and life safety inspections of existing buildings or new construction for fire code compliance and provide interpretation of fire codes. Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and explain these measures to property owners or their representatives. Work includes performing inspections of special event venues to ensure fire code compliance. Incumbent acts as a highly visible, interactive and enthusiastic proponent for fire and life safety. Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups, school organizations, healthcare, other care giving organizations, business associations, local government officials, agencies, and individuals to foster support for fire and life safety programs. Manages the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention program, Smoke and CO2 Alarm program, School Fire Drill, Business Evacuation Drill, Child Car Seat Safety program and other educational programs as identified and approved by the FM.
Additional responsibilities include monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of public education programs and reporting this information to the FM. Work includes researching and analyzing local and national fire and life safety data to assess and address trends related to human behavior, fire loss, and community safety. This position recommends strategies and specific programs to the FM to address current fire and life safety issues. Provides monthly and annual reports on the fire and life safety education programs.
Qualifications generally include a High School diploma or GED. Associates Degree in Fire Science, Public Education, and Fire Prevention. Valid Colorado Driver License. CPR/AED Certified. International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I or be able to obtain within one year of hire.Must be able to possess the following within three years: Colorado Division of Fire Safety Fire Suppression Inspector, Colorado Division of Fire Safety School Inspector I, Colorado Division of Fire Safety Public and Life Safety Educator I, Colorado Division of Fire Safety Public and Life Safety Educator II, Colorado Division of Fire Safety Juvenile Firesetter Specialist I, Car Seat Technician, ICC Fire Inspector II. Must satisfactorily complete an NFPA 1582 medical physical, psychological exam, polygraph test, driving record check, and criminal background check prior to commencing employment.
