In an online message, Commissioner Daniel Nigro tells Paris firefighters that the thoughts of the FDNY are with them as "they bravely battle this terrible fire."

The head of the FDNY has a message for Parisian firefighters who battled the devastating blaze at Notre Dame cathedral — we’re with you.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro put words of support on the department’s Twitter account Monday.

“Images of Notre Dame in flames are an awful sight to behold," he wrote. "The thoughts of the FDNY are with the members of @PompiersParis as they bravely battle this terrible fire in one of the world’s most beautiful and historic houses of worship.”

About 500 firefighters worked inside and out of the cathedral after the blaze started around 6:45 p.m. local time.

Notre Dame’s central spire toppled. But firefighters succeeded in saving the cathedral’s exterior.
