The East Brunswick chief was responding to a call—his SUV's emergency lights and siren on—when the fatal accident happened Sunday night.

A New Jersey fire chief who was responding to an emergency call was in a car crash that killed a couple Sunday night.

The East Brunswick chief, whose names was not released, had the emergency lights and sirens activated on his department SUV when the accident happened on the Old Bridge Turnpike, NJ.com reports. A South River couple in the other vehicle was taken to a New Brunswick hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

An East Brunswick Fire Department No. 1 spokeswoman told NJ.com that the chief had been put on administrative while "facts are clarified." The crash is being investigated by officials following claims that police did not tell the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office about the incident in a timely fashion.

“I find that hard to believe,” the department spokeswoman told NJ.com.
