Retiring NM Fire Chief: FD in Good Hands with Successor

Nov. 18, 2019
"It’s bittersweet, but I’m very happy to be able to retire," said outgoing Portales Fire Chief Gary Nuckols, who says training rookies was his favorite part of his career.

PORTALES, NM—The Portales City Council will bid farewell to Fire Chief Gary Nuckols while welcoming newly appointed Chief Timothy J. Cathey to the post during its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday.

“It’s bittersweet, but I’m very happy to be able to retire,” Nuckols said. “I’m leaving a lot behind, but I am very happy with what I’ve accomplished. I’m looking forward to it.”

Nuckols has been with the Portales Fire Department for 22 years and will leave his post in December. He said he had considered retiring last year, but held on, in part to see through the construction of the new fire station in the northeastern part of the city.

“We’re leaving the department and city in very good hands with TJ. He’s young, intelligent and full of fire,” Nuckols said. “I think he’ll be able to take the department much farther than I’ve ever been able to.”

Out of all the highlights of his career, Nuckols said his favorite point was training rookie firefighters as emergency responders as a lieutenant.

Other agenda items from the 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Memorial Building include:

  • Ratifying October’s bills for the Finance Department.
  • The council will consider a resolution to participation in a Road Fund program administered by the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
  • The council will discuss the 2020 Capital Outlay Request List.
