A volunteer firefighter from the West Fork, Arkansas Volunteer Fire Department
was killed Wednesday, November 3 after stepping on a live wire at the
scene of a grass fire, officials said.
Jerry Ramey, 18 and a firefighter for just four months, came into contact with
a 7,200-volt electrical line in high brush.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that Ramey was a probationary firefighter
who had not yet been allowed to fight fires.
The paper reported that Ramsey's dream was to be a firefighter and paramedic.
Ramey leaves behind his parents and two sisters. His younger brother, then a seventh
grader, died last year while acting as a team assistant during a high school football game.
Funeral services for Ramey will be on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 2:00 PM at the Greenland
Arkansas High School gym with burial to follow at the Baptist Ford Cemetary.
