Center Point, Ala. firefighter/Paramedic Rickey L. Davis died Thursday night after falling through
the floor at a house fire, officials said.
"This is the first loss we've ever had," Mark Sims,
president of the Center Point Fire Board, told the Associated Press.
Davis, 33, was a five-year veteran of the department.
He was an extremely devoted family man. For
the last 15 years he was married to Darlene Davis and had three children,
Jessica 15, Torrey 12, and Deven 10.
He was reportedly the nozzleman on the blaze when he fell
through the floor into the basement, which was on fire, officials said.
The Alabama State Fire Marshall's office
and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department
are investigating the cause of the fire.
Fire Chief Paul Hunnicutt said "the Department is beginning the recovery process.
We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and the nation."
"Rickey was a close friend of mine ... I have never met a nicer, more sincere
person in my life," said Lieutenant Steve Elliott, the Department's
Webmaster who also worked on a shift with Davis for two years. "He was a fine
Christian man who was dedicated to his family and friends. My heart goes out to his
family, I have lost a friend, they have lost a husband and father."
Davis was employed by the
Center Point Fire Department as well as the City of
Homewood Fire Department. He worked earlier in his career
for the City of Bessemer Fire Department.
He was on duty at Center Point Fire Station 2 in Pinson
when he answered the alarm which took his life.
