A Story City, Iowa firefighter suffered a fatal heart attack while performing
overhaul operations at a house fire Sunday night, fire officials said.

The Story City Volunteer Fire Department
protects 5000 people living in an area of 115
square miles. It operates out of one station that
protects a primarily rural area. There are 24 volunteer
members.

Volunteer firefighter Doug Stevens, 42, collapsed at the scene and was pronounced dead at a local
hospital. The five-year veteran, the department's training officer, leaves
behind a wife and two teenage daughters.
The small fire in the walls near the fireplace was quickly extinguished, according
to Fire Chief Scott Nibe.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Petri Church
in Story City.
