Illinois Firefighter Succumbs to Injuries

Springfield, Illinois Fire Capt. Steve Wilmot, a 15-year veteran, died Wednesday after hospitalization from a fall during an arson investigation.

Wilmot was injured July 18 and entered the hospital that evening. The cause of death has not been determined.

Wilmot, 47, had joined the arson investigation team only this year. He had been a front-line firefighter since joining the department.

Springfield Fire Chief J.D. Knox has stated the department is treating this as a line-of-duty death.

Wilmot's death is the first line-of-duty death for the Springfield Fire Department in 31 years.

A funeral, with full firefighter honors, is tentatively scheduled for Monday. Wilmot is survived by his wife, Sandy, and three children.

Visitation for Captain Wilmot is scheduled for Sunday, August 13th from 4 - 7 pm at Bisch and Sons Funeral Home West on Koke Mill Road in Springfield, IL. Pass in review for Uniform FireFighters in attendance will begin at 5pm.

Funeral Services will be Monday the 14th at 11am at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. Fire Department personnel that wish to march in the funeral procession through the downtown should meet between 4th and 5th street on Capitol Ave by 10am.

Departments that are sending rigs should have the vehicle at the funeral home at 10 am on Monday. Burial is at Camp Butler Cemetery.

A reception for firefighters and their families will be held directly after the burial at the Teamsters Hall at 916 N. Dirksen Parkway in Springfield.

Springfield Hilton has set aside a block of rooms for Sunday and Monday night at a rate of $75 a night. Reservation information:
