Volunteer firefighter Lisa A. Farrow of the Engelhard, N.C. Fire & Rescue Department died Wednesday, Aug. 9 after responding to a kitchen fire.
Farrow, 30, had been moving some equipment and collapsed, said Chief Tony Spencer. No cause of death has been determined at this time.
Firefighters arrived at the 6:09 p.m. call at 265 Hycienda Heights, Engelhard, N.C. to find the small fire primarily extinguished by the resident, Spencer said.
"They had just put some equipment back on the truck when she collapsed," he said. Another firefighter summoned EMS, which was about 25 feet away, and Farrow was immediately treated and transported about 50 miles to the nearest hospital, Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.
"She went into cardiac arrest shortly after departure," Spencer said, and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:50 p.m.
Farrow leaves behind two children, eight and ten years old, Spencer said. She had one year of service with the 16-member department, which serves a population of 2000.
She was employed as a correctional officer at Hyde Correctional Center, and was active in a state employees' association and a state correctional officers' association.
Farrow was a popular person in the community, Spencer said.
Updated Information - Monday 8/14
A preliminary report from the Medical Examiner indicates that Farrow died of Acute Hypoxia due to Pulmonary Edema. This cause is believed to be natural and not dramatically influenced by her fire scene activity.
Firefighter Farrow is currently being honored by several national fire service organizations and agencies. The N. C. Fallen Firefighters Foundation has initiated plans for a scholarship fund for Farrow's two children, ages 10 and 8. The Engelhard Fire & Rescue Department plans to establish a fund to assist the family with their expenses.
The funeral was held Sunday, August 13th at 3 p.m. Due to the crowd expected from both the fire service and the Department of Corrections, the location was moved to the Mattamuskeet School located on Hwy 264 eight miles east of Swan Quarter and 13 miles west of Engelhard. The burial followed at Brown Memorial Cemetery on Goshen Back Rd.
