Last month's deadly supermarket fire is leading to changes in Phoenix Fire Department policy.
Firefighter Bret Tarver was killed battling the 5-alarm blaze at the Southwest Supermarket at 35th Avenue and McDowell.
Fire officials said the department is looking at technology, training procedures, and firefighting strategies that could make fire scenes, like the one last month, safer.
"If we let buildings burn, we're not a very good fire department. We have to go into buildings to do search and rescue, but we have to balance that with the safety of firefighters and we're in the process of doing that," said Deputy Chief Bob Khan.
Khan said the department will start reviewing information about the fire with station level officers next week. They hope to have new equipment and procedures in place in six months.
Investigators determined the fire was arson and began in a pile of cardboard piled to the rear of the store. The fire quickly then quickly spread into the store.
