College Park, MD (June 20) -- Firehouse.com and Amtrak have announced that
free rail service will be offered for firefighters in the Northeast to
attend the funerals of the three New York City firefighters who died in an
explosion at a hardware store on Father’s Day.
"On behalf of Amtrak’s employees, I am pleased to offer this small token of our respect and
support for the firefighters who risk their lives everyday," said Stan
Bagley, President of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.
Firehouse.com has been working with Amtrak to promote the special offer.
Amtrak will offer special cars on six designated trains to New York from
both Boston and Washington in order for firefighters to attend the services
on Thursday and Friday.
The complete schedule of trains will be posted on Firehouse.com by 6 p.m.
Wednesday.
The Southbound train for the first funeral Thursday morning will depart
Boston at 7 p.m. tonight. Firefighters will need to present official fire
department identification at their boarding station’s agent in order to be
boarded.
Firefighters may connect to the Long Island Rail Road for all three funeral
services, and to the NYC Subway for Friday’s specifically, from Amtrak’s
Penn Station in New York.
Thousands of Firefighters from across North America are expected to attend
the funerals for FDNY Bravest Brian Fahey, Harry Ford, on Thursday, and John
Downing, on Friday. Amtrak joins US Airways in stepping up to offer those
Firefighters special offers to attend the services.
US Airways is offering Firefighters travelling to the funeral a special
reduced fare to New York from anywhere in the country. The fare guarantees
at least 7% off the Advance Purchase Fare.
Since the tragic Father’s Day fire on Sunday afternoon, more than 125,000
visitors have logged onto the site, with hundreds posting messages of
condolence and support from all over the world.
