FDNY Memorial Service: Frequently Asked Questions

Source International Association of Fire Fighters

  • Can we bring our honor guard or pipe band?

The IAFF will be setting up an honor guard sector to coordinate honor guards. The use and placement of honor guards will be strictly regulated. Honor guards that wish to participate must e-mail the IAFF at memorial@iaff.org mailto:memorial@iaff.org and provide name of contact person, the type of honor guard and the exact number of people in the honor guard.

  • Should we/can we bring our fire apparatus?

NO. Fire apparatus from outside fire departments are not allowed nor will parking be provided for apparatus except in remote staging areas outside of Manhattan. Madison Square Garden, the hotels and the parking system are not prepared or capable to accommodate your fire apparatus.

  • Can the IAFF make the travel arrangements for our members?

NO. The IAFF is unable to make individual arrangements. All arrangements, rates, guarantees and charges are the responsibility of the individual.

  • Where are the hotels located?

Please see the Travel/Lodging link for specific contact information. It is recommended that you contact the hotel directly for driving, parking and other specific instructions.

  • How many people can we bring from our fire department or local?

All fire fighters are encouraged to attend. However, the seated arena in Madison Square Garden is not capable of accommodating any fire fighters except those in FDNY. Even though we are not able to provide access and/or seating for all of our members, please note that we want everyone to participate in the processional march and viewing of the memorial from the outside of Madison Square Garden.

  • How do we 'register' for the service?

There is no formal registration process for those participating in the processional march. The family members, FDNY and governmental officials and dignitaries will be provided credentials/tickets for access into the Garden. Due to heightened security, the IAFF is not able to process any requests for special seating on site - NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • Do you have to be an IAFF member to attend?

NO. All are welcome to attend.

  • Can our local bring our Fire Chief/other non-IAFF person to the service?

You are free to bring whomever you would like. Keep in mind that only those personnel in dress uniform will be permitted to participate in the processional march. Only those with previous clearance and special ticketing will be permitted into Madison Square Garden and the seating areas outside of the Garden.

  • Can our local receive some type of financial assistance from the IAFF?

NO. No provisions or arrangements have been made to help individual IAFF affiliates or members for their travel or lodging expenses.

How many people are expected to attend?

Madison Square Garden will be completely full for the memorial service. Again, the seating in the Garden will be for the families of the deceased fire fighters, the members of FDNY, their families, and governmental officials and dignitaries.

Over 50,000 uniformed personnel are expected to be associated with the processional march and/or services. If your questions are not answered here, please send an email to memorial@iaff.org.
