The International Association of Fire Fighters is pleased to inform you that New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Fire Commissioner Tom Von Essen have agreed to cooperate with the IAFF in putting together a FDNY 9-11 Memorial Service to honor our fallen Brothers, their families and members of the Fire Department of the City of New York. The service will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2001 at Madison Square Garden between 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. A procession of fire fighters, being led by the members of FDNY will begin several hours prior to the 11:00 A.M. service. Specific details on time and the procession will be forthcoming when the logistics are completed.

There is no doubt that this will be a worldwide event with over 75,000 people expected to participate. At the present time we are expecting more than 7,000 family members of the 344 fallen fire fighters; 9,000 off-duty members of the FDNY; and 10,000 of their family members. We are estimating that at least 50,000 out-of-town IAFF members and uniformed personnel from around the world will attend.

This does not include the hundreds of thousands of citizens who are expected to line the streets along the route of the fire fighter procession to pay their respects.

This will be the largest event, by far, that the International has ever held. The logistics of holding an event of this proportion in a very short time frame will be very challenging to say the least. However, with the IAFF's experience in handling memorial services for multiple line-of-duty deaths, together with the knowledge and expertise of the Fire Department of the City of New York, the NYPD and New York City government officials, the IAFF is certain that the event will be very respectful and successful.

All questions and requests for up-to-date Information should be directed to the IAFF web site at >www.iaff.org Send E-mail to memorial@iaff.org for all inquiries related to the Memorial Service.

The official phone number for all inquiries related to the Memorial Service is (703) 359-0057. The phones will be staffed with nine IAFF members from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Saturday.

PLEASE DO NOT - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - contact the local affiliates in New York (Uniformed Firefighters Association/IAFF Local 94 or Uniformed Fire Officers Association/IAFF Local (854) or the IAFF Headquarters regarding the details of the memorial service. All of the details will be posted on the web site as soon as they are known.

  • Official Date: The official date of the IAFF/FDNY memorial service is Sunday, November 18, 2001 in New York City.

  • Location of Service: The ceremonies related to the service will be held at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. It is located on Seventh Avenue between 33rd and 31st streets

  • Time of Service: The memorial events will consist of two main events:

    • 1. A processional march will commence at 8:30 a.m. and proceed through Manhattan to Madison Square Garden. The IAFF in coordination with the New York City Police Department will establish multiple 'staging areas' for our fire fighters. Once this has been finalized, you should refer to the IAFF website (and Firehouse.com) for a detailed map of the staging areas and processional route. All uniformed fire fighters are encouraged to participate in the procession. WE NEED TO MAKE A STRONG SHOWING OUT OF RESPECT FOR FALLEN BROTHERS, THEIR FAMILIES AND ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE FDNY.
    • 2. The service is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m. The service will last for two hours. Only the families of the fallen fire fighters, members of the FDNY, their families and those officials and dignitaries related to the ceremonies will be permitted to enter Madison Square Garden. We are attempting to secure limited-seating venues that will be located near Madison Square Garden. At the completion of the procession, all uniformed personnel will be assembled in the streets surrounding Madison Square Garden. The IAFF will secure jumbotrons and speaker systems.

  • Time for Uniformed Personnel to arrive: All uniformed personnel must convene at the staging areas at the specified times (to be announced) in order to organize the processional march. Exact times and locations will be posted when they are available. Prior to the procession, uniformed personnel and the public will not be allowed to assemble in any areas surrounding Madison Square Garden. Any uniformed personnel that are not participating in the processional will only be allowed in the area AFTER the marchers have assembled. The public will not be allowed in these areas until all uniformed personnel have assembled.

  • Length of Service: After the conclusion of the march, the service is schedule to commence at exactly 11 a.m. It will last for two hours. Recommended Dress/Attire: All uniformed personnel are expected to arrive in their Class A uniform or appropriate formal dress attire. It is recommended that you wear all of the accessories (e.g., gloves, hat, etc.) associated with your uniform.

  • Parking: Keep in mind that over 50,000 fire fighters are expected to attend the memorial service. Accordingly, all parking and transportation services will be overburdened. The IAFF is working with the NYPD to secure remote parking areas that utilize mass transit services, if possible. Once secured we will provide transportation schedules and routes.

  • Hotels: The IAFF has made every effort possible to help secure lodging arrangements for all uniformed personnel desiring accommodations. Please note that all hotel reservations are first-come, first-served and are the sole responsibility of the individual. The IAFF is unable to establish, confirm, or intervene on behalf of anyone in relation to hotel or other lodging arrangements. All rates quoted were valid at the time contact was established with the hotel. The IAFF is not able to guarantee the rates or contact the hotel on behalf of an individual. It is recommended that you contact the hotel immediately in order to confirm lodging. Please be sure to identify yourself with the 'FDNY/IAFF Memorial Service' in order to receive the special rate.

Please click on the Travel/Lodging link to the right for detailed information on hotel locations, rates and contact numbers.
