A "Day of Recognition and Remembrance" will be held at the Jacob Javits
Convention Center Special Events Hall (West 34th Street & 11th Avenue) at 2
p.m.
Liz Donelly, of the New York Medical Advisory Council, said, "we expect a
nice turn out -- we have been getting overwhelmed. Every hour another phone
call comes in, some from as far away as Canada." Donnelly describes the
event as a way of honoring, "not only New York EMS but also the hospital
based providers and volunteers."
Eight EMS workers from various agencies died on September 11. EMS care
providers of all levels were on alert in the immediate region after the
attacks. Donnelly said that this tribute would recognize that effort. "A lot
of people were on alert and willing to help, but just not able to at the
time. We want to thank them as well," she said.
In the aftermath of the attacks EMS, while being recognized, did not benefit
from the massive exposure given to the fire and police departments. While no
one can deny the massive sacrifice made by the FDNY, Donnelly and others are
hoping to honor the EMT’s and Paramedics who risked and lost their lives,
with a moment in the spotlight.
The Medical Advisory Council has invited numerous speakers, including the
Governor and Mayor among others. While they have no firm commitments they
expect the tribute to be a special occasion.
