A Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Captain collapsed and died while exercising at his station Wednesday evening.
Captain Darryl Dzugen began his 24 hour shift at 8 a.m. and went for his nightly jog around the station grounds around 8 p.m. according to IAFF Local 2294 Secretary Firefighter Chris Boles. Shortly thereafter a bystander alerted the crew on duty that a man was down and needed assistance.
Station 14 personnel found Dzugen in cardiac arrest. He was immediately transported to University Community Hospital in Tampa where he was later pronounced dead.
Captain Dzugen began his career with Hillsborough County in 1985 and worked at one of the busiest stations in the County in a section known as "suitcase city" in the university area. He was very involved in teaching at the Hillsborough Community College Fire Science Program. He was also active in Local 2294.
He is survived by his wife Jackie and two sons, five and eight.
Viewings will be held Sunday and Monday, Sept. 2 and 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blount Curry and Roel Funeral Home. They are located at 5101 N. Nebraska Avenue., Tampa, FL 33603
Funeral services will be held at the Sundome on the University of South Florida Campus on Tuesday at 10 a.m. It is located at 4202 East Fowler Ave., Tampa, Florida 33620.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is a combination department of about 620 paid and 200 volunteer personnel. Station 14 houses 2 engine companies a ladder company, a rescue car, and a battalion chief.
