Richard Terry, 63, a reserve firefighter with the Brooksville, Florida Fire
Department, died May 18. He suffered a heart attack May 7 while operating a
tanker and working accident cleanup.
The accident involving an overturned truckload of potash had happened
earlier in the day. Terry as a paid/on call firefighter, had relieved shift
personnel and was washing down the accident scene when he was stricken. He
was transported to Brooksville Regional Hospital and later moved to
Bayonette Point Hospital where he passed away.
Shift commander Captain Steve Guckian said a full firefighter funeral was
held May 25. Members from over 30 fire departments attended and filled a
mile-long procession to the Brooksville Cemetery where Terry was interred.
Terry had been with the department since 1995. He was employed with the city
of Brooksville as a streets department supervisor.
Terry is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. Guckian said two
of the sons are with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Department
The Brooksville FD has 15 paid and 12 reserve firefighters. They serve the
town and a 30 square mile township of Hernando County.
