Last Year's Service at Emmitsburg

Each October a grateful nation honors its fallen fire heroes during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. This year's event will be held in Washington, DC, on Sunday, October 6, 2002, at the MCI Center. "The unprecedented number of firefighters being honored this year will necessitate our moving the memorial service from the site of the National Fallen Firefighters Monument in Emmitsburg," stated Foundation Chairman Hal Bruno. The 21st observance of the national tribute will include the largest number of fallen firefighters killed in the line of duty in the history of America's fire service.

Firehouse Expo recognizes a need to increase support for the National Fallen Firefighers Foundation and responds to the call. The 19th Annual Firehouse Expo will be held July 16-21 in Baltimore, Maryland. Each year, Firehouse Expo brings together over 12,000 fire, rescue and EMS professionals from across the country to train and educate firefighters and emergency service responders to prepare them for today's realities facing the fire and emergency service community. This year each attendee will have the opportunity to show their support for the fire industry and those who have dedicated their lives to our country.

Firehouse Expo's partnership with the NFFF features donation opportunities on all event registration materials, both pre-event as well as on-site. Other fundraising opportunities include a three-day prominent exhibit floor location, event clothing commemorating the NFFF, and a "Pass the Boot" drive on the exhibit floor as well as at the parade on Sunday. All proceeds will be donated to the foundation. Hal Bruno, who is working to make this partnership a success acknowledged the effort, "Obviously our foundation is faced this year with increased expenditures and Firehouse Expo's willingness to support us in our mission deserves special recognition."

Other highlights at this year's Firehouse Expo include several conference sessions addressing operations at the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks of September 11, 2001. With terrorism still at the forefront of the National agenda, programs discussing radiation and anthrax exposure will be presented, preparing fire service professionals for the new reality. In addition to sessions on weapons of mass destruction, educational tracks include firefighter safety, leadership development, strategy and tactics, rescue operations EMS, apparatus, close calls and hands-on training. Firefighter safety is the main focus and the goal is to keep fire professionals safe and prepared for the next incident.

"The renewed pride and attention the firefighting community has received post September 11th, coupled with our partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, makes this year's Firehouse Expo a particularly exciting event," said Chief Harvey Eisner, Conference director and Editor-in-Chief of Firehouse Magazine. "Our goal is to keep the firefighting community and the public at large informed of the latest trends in the fire service and to provide a worthwhile event for all attendees."
