A 14-year-old Brookhaven, Pa. junior firefighter reportedly responding on his bicycle to a fire incident was struck by a teenage-driver and died
from his injuries a few hours later.
The boy, identified by a fire department officer as Christopher Kangas, was a few days from his 15th birthday, Officer Mark Mugler of the Brookhaven
Police Department said.
"The junior firefighter was riding his bike to the incident when he was struck by a motor vehicle and died
a few hours later from severe trauma to the head," Mugler Said.
Mugler said a brief memorial service was held Sunday at the site of the accident at Seiger and Maple Streets in Brookhaven.
Officials said funeral and related information would be available Monday.
No charges were expected to be filed in connection with the accident, but the investigation was continuing, Mugler
said.
Kangas was initially transported to nearby Crozer-Chester Medical Center, and then flown to Children's Hospital
in Philadephia where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Further information will be posted as it becomes available.
It was the second tragic death of a first responder in the Delaware County, Pennsylvania region in less than a week.
Last week, Caterina Marie DiGiacomo, 21, an off-duty EMT, was killed in a crash with a firefighter who was responding
to an incident in her personal vehicle.
