PA Assistant Chief Who Fell from Apparatus Dies

Walter Wagaman, a 32-year veteran of the Buchanan Valley Fire Department, was severely injured when he fell from an apparatus while responding to a call earlier this month.

A Pennsylvania assistant chief who was critically injured after falling from an apparatus died early Wednesday, according to his fire department.

Buchanan Valley Assistant Fire Chief Walter Wagaman, 46, was responding with four other firefighters to a crash Aug. 2 in Menallen Township when the accident happened. He was flown to Wellspan York Hospital, "where he battled his injuries for 12 days," the Buchanan Valley Fire Department said in a statement.

Wagaman's organs were donated early Wednesday, and colleagues were at the hospital to salute him. 

"We thank those who lined the hallways of York Hospital in recognition of a true hero during the Honor Walk," the department said.

Pennsylvania State Police Gettysburg is investigating the incident, and an autopsy will be conducted later in the week, the York County Coroner's office told the Evening Sun

Funeral arrangements for Wagaman, a 32-year veteran of the Buchanan Valley Fire Department, have not been finalized, the department added.
