Fire Destroys Landmark Inn On Massachusetts Oceanfront
Marshfield, MA, March 17, 1998 – A spectacular fire destroyed the landmark 122-year-old Fairview Inn. The fire spread throughout the three-story wooden landmark overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently, this was one of the last of the old inns that once lined the coast from Boston to Cape Cod. Firefighters from Marshfield were assisted by an engine and truck from Duxbury.

54 Injured In Fire Aboard Cruise Ship
Miami Beach, FL, July 20, 1998 – A fire in the rear of the 855-foot-long Carnival Cruise Lines ship Ecstasy spread to several decks, injuring 54 of the 3,500 people aboard the ship. The ship had just left port and was headed on a four-day cruise to K ey West, FL, and Cozumel, Mexico. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the cause of the blaze as well as shipboard operations and the crew's actions during the blaze.

Single-Engine Plane Crashes In Connecticut
Stratford, CT, March 18, 1998 – The pilot of a single-engine plane was killed when he attempted to make a landing at the Sikorsky Memorial Airport despite heavy winds and rain that brought visibility to near zero. The plane crashed into a parking lot . Firefighters from the airport, Bridgeport and Stratford applied foam to a fuel spill in the area of the crash.
