September 98 cover

On This Month's Cover:

To celebrate the 350 years of dedicated service, artist Chas Fagan was commissioned by the Congressional Fire Services Institute to capture the years of valor on canvas. The composition brings together a bucket brigade from the year 1648 and a firefighter from today. By having today's firefighter looking toward the future, the painting illustrates a fire service constantly thinking about the challenges ahead. Yet it also reminds us of the fire service's legacy, a 350-year continuum, without any break in the seam, of preserving our communities. The person depicted in the painting, Firefighter Mike Vogt of the Casper, Wyoming, Fire Department, was diagnosed with cancer. He has since recovered. Tradition is the main focus of this month's edition of Firehouse Magazine.
