The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a jack-knifed double gasoline tractor-trailer that burst into flames, killing the driver. The driver had swerved to avoid an abandoned car on the 710 ( (Long Beach Freeway) in the Bell Gardens section of the county. Two hundred nearby residents were evacuated. The early-morning fire was controlled in two hours. The freeway was shut down for 12 hours.

This month's Firehouse® is dedicated to Firefighter Samuel Lee Green, 50, of the Shelby County, TN, Fire Department, Lieutenant Randy Neal Jones, 23, of the Cool Springs, NC Volunteer Fire Department, Pilot Randall Harmon, 44, of Superior Helicopter, LLC, in Grants Pass, OR, Firefighter Douglas Bruce Coffey, 51, of the Blowing Rock, NC, Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, July 2003; and to Firefighter/EMT Ronald L. Holmes, 43, of the North Platte, NE, Fire Department and Firefighter Barry D. Lutsy, 44, of the Racine, WV, Volunteer Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, August 2003.
