Firefighters from Freeburg, IL, were assisted by the Smithton, Fayettville and Mascoutah fire departments in battling a fire in a rural dwelling on April 14, 2000. Firefighters had to relay water from 11?2 miles away. During the early-afternoon blaze, firefighters were hampered by exploding ammunition and a liquid propane tank inside the structure.

This month's Firehouse® is dedicated to Lieutenant Christopher Towne, 52, of the Detroit Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, January 2001; and to Firefighter Matthew Smith 33, of the Redwood City, CA, Fire Department; Chief Engineer Donald L. Nesler, 56, of the Amity, PA, Fire Company; Lieutenant Clint Talley, 27, and Firefighter Mike McKean, 32, of the Ashton, IL, Fire Protection District; and Firefighter James Isberner, 60, of the Montello, WI, Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, February 2001.
