A three-alarm fire ripped through a vacant store in the community of Wellston in St. Louis County, MO, on Dec. 8, 1998. It took 11 engines, two ladders, one squad and 50 firefighters using two ladder pipes, two deck guns and several handlines to control the blaze. An interior attack was made until conditions and the order was given to evacuate the building.
