A Detroit, MI, firefighter operates a handline on a well-involved residence during the blackout that affected portions of the Northeast Aug. 14-16, 2003. Because of communications problems, this fire was reported to an engine house by an off-duty firefighter using a cell phone. The fire extended to an adjacent dwelling.

Carbonneau Sr., 49, of the Maytown East Donegal Township, PA, Fire Department; Fire Explorer Anndee Huber, 16, of the Newcastle , WY, Volunteer Fire Department; Firefighter Jason Lee Ellis, 29, of the Loretto, TN, Fire Department; and Lieutenant Trent A. Kirk, 39, and Private Charles Zachary, 39, of the City of Memphis, TN, Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, May 2003.
