South Florida City Re-Hires Laid Off Firefighters

More than a dozen Hialeah firefighters set to be laid off were given a reprieve last night just as they prepared to turn in their gear, according to WSVN-TV

The city and the union were able to reach a last-minute deal, saving 14 firefighters and nine recruits.

"I'm so happy right now," Firefighter Recruit Alejandro Heredia told the news station. "I left a very secure job to come here."

Tthe fire union agreed to give up two holiday days over two months.

The deal lasts only through December, which could mean another standoff between the two sides come then.

Last week, the city announced plans to lay off more than 100 firefighters over the next year.
