BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --
One person died in an overnight apartment fire near Indiana University in Bloomington early Saturday.
The Monroe County coroner said Renee Ohrn, 19, of Gary, died in the fire at the Terra Trace Apartments in the 300 block of East 14th Street.
Officials said Ohrn was a student at IU and lived in Eigenmann Hall on campus, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.
John Orlando lives across the street from the apartment building and captured videos of the intense flames on his cellphone.
“There was fire in the hall on the first floor, and embers falling down the steps as people ran out from the basement. It was unbelievable,” Orlando said.
IU student Annie Wadzinski lives in the complex and said she couldn’t believe how quickly the flames spread.
"It was way worse than anyone really realized that it was,” Wadzinski said. “It looked like the whole building was on fire, and the sides of the building started to fall off."
Witnesses said firefighters smashed out windows to battle the smoke and flames.
Investigator said people on the upper floors jumped off their balconies, or were rescued with ladders.
An IU Health - Bloomington Hospital representative said four other people were also injured in the fire.
Officials did not release information about their condition.
Officials said a news conference was scheduled for Monday to announce the results of Ohrn’s autopsy and the cause of the fire.
