A Cherokee County firefighter is in intensive care following a fatal blaze Sunday that also injured two of his colleagues, according to WAGA-TV.

Firefighter David Gray sustained lung injuries and smoke inhalation after bricks fell on top of him while battling a house fire in the 800 block of Commons Court in the Kingston Square Subdivision shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Two residents were killed in the blaze and crews found the structure fully engulfed when they arrived.

A portion of the porch collapsed as Gray and two other firefighters attempted to save the elderly couple, and they were sent 15 feet into the basement.

Firefighters Matthew Richter and David Burnaugh were transported to the hospital and were later released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
