When the North Tower collapsed, smoke, dust and debris traveled northward. Firefighters, first responders and civilians could not outrun the dust cloud.
Two new FDNY fireboats are shown on either side of the new North Tower currently under construction at the World Trade Center site. The two tower cranes on the roof were 76 stories high at press time.
The vast area of destruction is evident in this image taken several days after the attacks.
Past 9/11 Coverage
In the worst terrorist attack on American soil, 2,752 people were murdered at the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11/01. Firehouse® Magazine presented about 65 interviews with responding FDNY firefighters in 13 issues after 9/11. The issue to the right covered the 1993 terrorist bombing at the WTC. The other issues are representative of stories told by firefighters in their own words that were part of the massive coverage presented after the deadly event.
