Fire officials at the scene said at least one person escaped the fire via a third-floor balcony.

They do not yet know the cause of the fire but said it appears to have started in the building's attic.

The American Red Cross was on the scene assisting the displaced residents, which include a number of students from the University of Michigan.

They are being put up in a nearby hotel.
