PRUNEDALE, Calif. --

A 250-gallon propane tank exploded inside a Prunedale house on the 500 block of Strawberry Road just before noon Thursday, North Monterey County firefighters said.

The propane tank blew out the one-story house's windows, walls and ripped off part of the ceiling. Two people were hurt with moderate injuries.

Neighbors in the rural neighborhood said they felt and heard a powerful explosion and ran to the house to help.

North Monterey County firefighters are investigating the home's kitchen, where the propane tank appears to have been located.

"House explosions actually happen quite frequently," North Monterey County Fire Chief Humberto Arista said. The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
