Firefighters from multiple departments were called to a fire that erupted in a retirement home on Friday night, killing one person.

Witnesses spotted flames at Brookview Place, a retirement home in the 4300 block of North Main Street in Harrison Township just before 11 p.m.

Firefighters arrived and worked quickly to evacuate the residents, but one woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. She later died from her injuries.

The woman was identified as Nancy Ross, 64.

Firefithers were able to get all the other occupants to safety before anyone else was seriously injured.

The American Red Cross set up a shelter at the Shiloh Church for 10 residents who could not find a safe place to stay. However, the shelter closed after everyone found a place to stay.

An unattended candle likely sparked the blaze, the Harrison Township Fire Department said.
