WENTWORTH, N.H. --

The attorney general's office and members of the State Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating a fire in Wentworth in which two people were injured.

The fire broke out at a home at 284 Rowentown Road just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. Two people were injured, and rescuers said they were being treated at Boston Hospitals.

The two were later identified as Barry Winters, 60, and Evelyn Spodnik, 57.

Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said her office is investigating because the two people are in critical condition and the fire is considered suspicious.

Fire Chief Jeff Ames said fire could be seen on the second floor of the building when firefighters arrived.

"We had fire in the second story of the building," he said. "We vented one of the windows and got an attack going in."

Ames said the two occupants of the home were at a neighbor's house by the time firefighters arrived.

"Based on a conversation with the occupants, we found out there were no further people in the building," Ames said.

He said it took about a half-hour to bring the fire under control.

"It was a slow-burning fire," he said. "The building was well insulated, so it was moving slowly in the upstairs area."

Ames said the fire marshal's office is investigating how the fire started.
