VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. --

Early Wednesday morning, two tractor trailers were involved in an accident on I-94.

The explosion happened at Haggerty on westbound I-94 in Van Buren Township. Van Buren police said an unoccupied tractor trailer was parked on the side of the freeway when another tractor trailer went off the road and crashed into the parked truck.

Both trucks burst into flames and were destroyed. The flames were put out by fire crews but the wreckage hasn't been cleared off of the freeway.

"The semi struck another parked semi on the freeway. The moving vehicle was full of liquor, the stationery vehicle had coiled steel," said a firefighter on the scene.

Westbound I-94 between Haggerty and Belleville road is temporarily closed down until crews are able to clear the scene. Crews estimate the freeway will be closed until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the semi was injured and taken to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor and is believed to be in critical condition. Michigan State Police are investigating what caused the crash.
