SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. --

A veteran firefighter was hurt Tuesday while battling a garage fire in Sacramento County, an official said.

The blaze occurred at 6736 Ellsworth Circle in Fair Oaks.

Sacramento Metro Firefighter Jeffery Wells fell through the roof of the burning home. He was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment. Wells suffered a knee injury and received some minor burns. He was listed in fair condition.

While on the roof performing vertical ventilation, the roof gave way, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Cockrum said.

"This is the worst thing that can happen to us. That mayday call is something that scares the heck out us everybody," Cockrum said.

A fire captain called mayday, and rescuers were sent in. Wells was quickly found and brought to safety.

Wells, 45, is a 21-year veteran of Metro Fire.

Fire officials told KCRA 3 that Wells was given the clearance to return back work in a few weeks.
