BOSTON --

Thirteen people were trapped in an elevator early Sunday morning at 500 Border St. in East Boston, fire officials said.

The elevator had become stuck on the fourth floor of the building.

Those trapped waited for about 90 minutes while a firefighter was lowered down the elevator shaft. He was then able to free those who had been stuck, taking them through the fifth floor doors.

Initial reports indicated that a pregnant woman in labor was trapped in the elevator.

Fire officials said the claim may have been made in an effort to have them speed up their rescue efforts.

Those in the elevator were described as a "rowdy crowd of young adults."

There was no pregnant woman on the elevator, officials said. No one was injured.
