Hawaii Firefighters Battle Sugarcane Fire

PAIA, Hawaii -- Fire department officials are investigating a brushfire at the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company in Paia on Saturday. Firefighters said they were called to the 10-acre sugarcane field fire at about 1:22 a.m. HC&S workers helped the fire department battle the blaze, which was located along Baldwin Avenue between Paia Elementary School and Rainbow County Park. Firefighters said they gained control of the fire by about 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters said they were called to the 10-acre sugarcane field fire at about 1:22 a.m.

HC&S workers helped the fire department battle the blaze, which was located along Baldwin Avenue between Paia Elementary School and Rainbow County Park.

Firefighters said they gained control of the fire by about 3:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Fire department officials said the sugarcane that burned was close to harvest and might be salvageable.
