POMPANO BEACH, Fla. --

A near cat-astrophe has been averted in Pompano Beach.

A kitten was found trapped inside a wall early Friday morning.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews worked for 30 minutes to free the animal.

Firefighters tried to reach the cat, but it was too far down.

They gently tapped the boards with sledge hammers, until they could reach the frightened cat.

The kitten was brought back to the Fire Rescue Station where the entire crew, including their lieutenant and the paramedics, took turns staying up to hold the animal.

The cat earned the nickname Rubble.

He is now recovering at the Tri-County Humane Society and will be available for adoption this weekend.
