SLIDELL, La. --

A historic building that houses a bar in Old Towne Slidell went up in flames Sunday evening, injuring three firefighters who worked to put out the flames.

Fire crews said the fire broke out at Club Phoenix at 227 Cousin St. about 5 p.m.

Witnesses said the fire could be seen for miles, and St. Tammany officials told WDSU it was the biggest fire they had seen in years. More than 30 firefighters worked the blaze.

The flames consumed the building, leaving only a shell of the structure, which was more than 80 years old.

Investigators were on scene late Sunday night going through what remained and planned to return Monday morning. Police said they would watch over the remains of the building overnight for safety reasons.
