6 Firefighters Hurt in Ceiling Collapse at L.A. Blaze

Six firefighters were injured late Wednesday night when a ceiling collapsed on them while they battled a house fire in Los Angeles.
A firefighter was in critical condition and five others were injured late Wednesday night after a ceiling collapsed on them while they battled a house fire in Los Angeles, according to KABC-TV.

Crews responded to the fire on the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive in Hollywood Hills at approximately 11:20 p.m. at a recently built three-story, 6,000-square-foot home.

Firefighters were working to gain access to the flames in the ceiling when it fell on them.

An unidentified firefighter was critically injured and transported to a local hospital in grave condition.

The Associated Press has reported that the firefighter was trapped in the blaze had no pulse or heartbeat when he was removed, but that they were restored.

"The fire was in the ceiling area, between the ceiling and the roof and the attic space and behind a wall near a fireplace," LAFD Deputy Chief Mario Rueda told KABC-TV.

Two people were inside the home when the fire started but were able to get out safely.

Four of the injured firefighters are from the city of Los Angeles while the other two are from Los Angeles County.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
