ELLICOTT CITY, Md. --

Howard County police said one man was injured after a county vehicle responding to an emergency call collided with another vehicle Saturday night.

According to police, the crash occurred at 10:17 p.m. on Route 40 near Pebble Beach Drive. A 2008 Honda Civic and a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban marked as a Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue vehicle were involved.

The Suburban collided with the Honda Civic while the suburban was traveling west on US Route 40 approaching Pebble Beach Drive with its emergency lights and siren activated, police said.

As the Suburban attempted to turn right onto Pebble Beach Drive, the Honda Civic failed to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle and smashed into the Suburban, according to police.

The 17-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was taken to Howard County General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Suburban was identified as John Thomas Poole Jr., a 20-year veteran of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.
